BIRDING PRE OR POST ANTARCTICA
Day
1: Transfer from the airport to the assigned hotel in the city of Buenos
Aires.
In the afternoon: The Costanera Sur Nature Reserve is located on the Rio de la Plata (River Plate), on the eastern side of the city of Buenos Aires. A few blocks away from the heart of the city, this reserve offers a unique opportunity to meet wildlife. Duration: 4 hours.
A great variety of trees, grasses,
and shrubs, typical of the Pampas and the coast of the River Plate,
can be appreciated from the trails. Grasslands, reedmace and rushes act as a
backdrop for lagoons with a highly varied fauna. Bird species typical of the
Pampas wetlands prevail, including Coscoroba
and Black-necked Swans, White-tufted Grebe, three species of
coot, several herons, and a good variety of ducks. Some passerines typical of
the marshes and grasslands include Rufous
Hornero, Spectacled Tyrant,
Chalk-browed Mockingbird, Great Pampa-finch, Black-and-Rufous Warbling-Finch, Masked Gnatcatcher and Yellow-winged Blackbird. It is usual
to find seventy species of birds in a visit.
Other
wildlife present here includes Coypu
(Nutria), Pampas Cavy, Hillary’s Side-necked Turtle and Black Tegu Lizard.
SCHEDULE: The reserve is open from Tuesday to Sunday. April to September: From 8:00 to 18:00 / October to March: From 8:00 to 19:00.
IMPORTANT:
The reserve is closed on Mondays and during the following national holidays:
first of
May 25 of
December, and first of January. It may also close without prior notice during
bad weather conditions.
Day
2: Transfer from the hotel
assigned to the airport (Jorge Newbery Aeropuerto) for a domestic flight to El
Calafate. Arrival
at the local airport (Comandante Amado Tola). Transfer to the Villa La
Angostura Ranch, on the way you will be able to observe different species of
birds. The dinner is included. Overnight
in Villa La Angostura (If there is no
availability at the Estancia, the accommodation will be in the Gobernador
Gregores location).
Day 3: Villa La Angostura. We moved to different points in the search for Hooded Grebe. On the way to the Lagoons where we can observe different species of the steppe.
Birds: Darwin´s Rhea. Upland
Goose, Ashy-headed Goose, Yellow-billed Pintail, Speckled Teal, Silver Teal,
Chiloe Wigeon, Andean Condor, Southern Caracara, Chimango Caracara, American
Kestrel, Rufous-chested Dotterel, Least
Seedsnipe, Kelp Gull, Common Miner, Chocolate-vented Tyrant, etc.
Day 4: La Angostura. The
breakfast provided by the hotel. Birding around the area. Overnight
in La Angostura. The dinner is included.
Birds: Elegant Crested-Tinamout, Silvery grebe, Hooded Grebe, Chilean flamingo, Black-necked Swan, Cinereous Harrier, Red-backed Hawk, Southern Lapwing, Austral Rail, Great Horned Owl, Rufous bandeded Miner, Buff-winged Cinclodes, Grey bellied Shrike-Tyrant, Spectacled Tyrant, Austral Negrito,
House Wren,
Patagonian Mockingbird, Correndera Pipit, Common Diuca-Finch, Yellow Finch,
Gray-hooded Finch, Mourning Sierra-Finch, Band-tailed Sierra-Finch, Long tailed
Meadowlark, etc.
Day 5: Transfer from the hotel assigned to the
airport for a domestic flight to Ushuaia. Arrival at the local airport
and transfer to the assigned Hotel. Overnight
in Ushuaia. The dinner is not included.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The program has an extra day for the obvious reasons that the Hooded Grebe depending on the season is an exceedingly difficult bird to see and you should have enough time to find it. The remaining time will be spent searching for other birds.
Day 6: Ushuaia. The
breakfast provided by the hotel. The Lago
Escondido Birding tour has been designed in focus on the High Andes vegetation,
several species of birds can be seen. Duration:
8 hours.
From the assigned hotel we head along the national route number three towards the Garibaldi Pass. We leave the city of Ushuaia to observe the mountains of the Soronodo range, Alvear mount, valleys, peat bogs, beaver dams, Low deciduous beech, High deciduous beech, and Evergreen beech.
We arrived at the Garibaldi Pass
(430 meters above sea level); we began the walk to reach the limit of
vegetation.
This is the environment where White
bellied Seedsnipe lives (inhabit: 600/900 above sea level). The box lunch is
included. Total number of kilometers for this morning: 110
